More snow in John Day

Here are a few more from my trip to John Day OR. In the last one you can see there had been a fire in the forrest. The light was so beautiful. The clouds were thinning so the light was still diffused but it was also a lot brighter. It made for a beautiful walk.

A river runs through it- Snow day in John Day

I took a trip to John Day Oregon recently and saw some lovely scenes when it snowed. It's a really beautiful area. I saw so many wild animals while I was there and on the drive there and back. The snow was really special for me. Growing up in Southern California I don't have a lot of experience with snow. I found it so beautiful and really magical. I love to look at the individual snow flakes, I wish I had had a micro lens with me to capture their detail. I was surprised by how soft it was when it was first falling. it felt more like cotton than ice.

Touch of Gold-Studio Portrait

This is a studio portrait I did a while back. I love working with hot lights because the light is so harsh and direct it makes for some really dramatic lighting like in this image. The problem with it, in terms of portraits, is it picks up every bit of texture, like on a woman's face. This woman has glorious, flawless, amazing skin but under the hot light there was still a lot retouching to do to achieve this beautiful smooth skin effect (which almost mimics her real skin) and still keep enough of the skins texture to keep the image looking natural.

Mama and Baby

This is my best friend Lindsey and her beautiful, sweet and oh so lovable baby boy Perry. I cherish every moment I spend with them which is never enough because they are a thousand miles away in the state of Washington.  I can't wait to see them again!

I accomplished this very soft lighting look (which is so lovely on the baby Perry's face And of course Lindsey's and any woman's as well) by shooting them under a overhang on a cloudy day. For the background I just used a relatively wrinkle-free sheet and taped it up with soft waves. I shot in raw so I pulled out a very over exposed version of the image and used that for the image background then I used a under exposed version of the image I made a layer over it in Photoshop with a mask over it that I inverted with "command/control I" and with a soft edged brush at a very low opacity I added the vignetting by painting white on the blacked out mask. This gave me the exact control I wanted to highlight my subjects rather than having a general shape vignette. Later on I will be releasing tutorials on retouching portraits, but I must say young Perry needed almost no retouching. He is perfectly adorable and made for the camera, in all the pictures we took he could do no wrong it was just 100% adorableness!

Samoa

Gearing up for my upcoming trip I am excited not just to see my best friend but her two cats. Last year when I was up there for her baby shower I snapped these of Samoa. She is a mighty huntress of ribbon!

Long beach from above

I shot these from just off of Cherry Avenue in Signal Hill.  There is this great view where you can basically see all of Long Beach. I shot during golden hour with the light coming in just off camera.  I corrected with a very soft s-curve and was rewarded with some very interesting shadows. Near or far Long Beach is so beautiful!

Hope

Sometimes when things are at their darkest, hope is the best we can do. Without hope we can't tear down white supremacy and build racial healing in this country.

I got engaged yesterday and today they celebrated with fireworks!!!

My fiance and I went up to signal hill and were able to see almost all the fireworks displays of Long Beach.  It was beautiful and a wonderful way to celebrate our new life together!

I jacked up the iso on these to keep the shutter speed as fast as I could in the dark while keeping as much of the scene in focus as possible.  Hope you enjoy them.  I had fun making them.
